Amrita Pritam was born Amrit Kaur in 1919 in the modern-day district of Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab, in British India, to a Khatri Sikh family. She was the only child of Raj Bibi, a schoolteacher, and Kartar Singh Hitkari, a poet, Braj Bhasha scholar, and literary journal editor. Aside from that, he was a Pracharak (Sikh preacher). Amrita's mother died when she was eleven. Soon after, she and her father went to Lahore, where she was still until 1947 when she migrated to India. She began writing at a young age, faced with adult duties and loneliness after her mother died. Her first collection of poems, Amrit Lehran ("Immortal Waves"), was published in 1936 when she was sixteen years old, and she married Pritam Singh, an editor with whom she had been involved since childhood, and changed her name from Amrit Kaur to Amrita Pritam.
